Dave Anderson’s sportswriting career began with the Brooklyn Eagle after graduating from Holy Cross College in 1951. The newspaper folded in 1955, leading Anderson to join The New York Journal-American, where he worked for 11 years. In 1966, Anderson had the opportunity to join The New York Times, as a general assignment sports reporter. He became a regular sports columnist there in 1971, writing for the “Sports of the Times” column. He is the author of 21 books, as well as more than 350 magazine articles.
In 1981, Mr. Anderson received the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary for his sports column. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Mr. Anderson won the 1965 E.P. Dutton Award for the best magazine sports story about “The Longest Day of Sugar Ray”; the 1972 E.P. Dutton Award for the best sports feature story of the year about the return of the heavyweight champion Joe Frazier to his Beaufort, S.C. hometown; the 1974 Nat Fleischer Award for excellence in boxing journalism; and, the 1994 Associated Press Sports Editors Red Smith Award for distinguished sports column writing. He was inducted into the National Sports Writers and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in Salisbury, N.C. in 1990.
