Ernie Harwell, Hall of Fame broadcaster and the voice of the Detroit Tigers for 42 years, has passed. He was a great man and a great ambassador to the game. BRC had the privilege of meeting with him once and hearing his thoughts on Baseball and the Babe. Baseball will miss you Ernie.

Factoid: Babe’s “Called Shot” during the 1932 World Series is considered to be the longest homerun hit in Chicago Cubs Stadium.

Guide to Site Sections

Welcome to "The Site that Ruth Built." To help guide your journey through BabeRuthCentral.com (BRC), a brief synopsis of each section is provided below. Consider this your insider's guide to the site. It will help you understand what each section is about, as well as provide a few highlights. We don't want you to miss anything that might be of interest to you!

Section 01: Stats - Babe & Those That Followed

In this section, we focus on all of the Babe's baseball playing abilities -- as both a hitter and a pitcher -- and reflect on just how great a player he truly was. The second part of this section can be summed up as stats, stats and more stats. We've dissected Babe's home runs in a number of ways. Plus, we've got his complete pitching, hitting & fielding stats over the course of his career. And, because there have been so many great sluggers that have followed the Babe, we've listed all the past & present members of the "500+ Home Run Club".

Section 02: Bio - Babe's Personal Side

Take an inside peek at the Babe's personal life, compiled from conversations with Babe's daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens; from others who knew Babe first- or second-hand; and, from other reliable sources. Here, you'll find information about Babe's childhood and life off the field with family and friends. Plus, we'll talk about Babe's love and commitment to his fans.

Section 03: Legends - Stories True & False

Probably no other professional sports star has as many legends about their career and life, as the Babe. In this section, we'll look at the big ones - such as the "Curse of the Bambino" and the "Called Shot" - and some of the smaller ones too. Be sure to check out Section 09 Voices, where you can also hear some of our interviewees talk about the legends.

Section 04: Impact - An Emotional Connection

Babe had a love for life, a love for the fans and a big heart. And, the fans returned that love in so many ways. In Section 04 Effect, we explore this topic further. We reflect on how Babe became larger than life - first as a way for people to celebrate during the Roaring 20's, later as a means to enable Americans to forget their troubles during the Great Depression and, then, in general in developing into America's first sports superstar. On the lighter side, we look at how Babe became ingrained in pop culture through advertising and other references within the fabric of American life. Lastly, in a BRC-exclusive straight from the Ruth Family, we offer images of telegrams that came to the family after Babe's passing. These telegrams show the outpouring of support and concern for his wife, Claire, and family.

Section 05: Legacies - Babe's Impact

The Homerun - there is no bigger impact from the Babe than that. Not only did Babe leave a lasting impression on American sports and popular culture through the homerun, there are also some other legacies as well. For example, while we certainly can't give Babe credit for starting Japanese professional baseball, his participation in the 1934 American All-Stars tour to Japan had a very positive impact and helped fuel the Japanese fans' growing love for the game. We also look at two lasting institutions - The Babe Ruth League, with over 850,000 young players throughout the country, and the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum in Baltimore. Of course, we can't forget Yankee Stadium - "The House that Ruth Built", either.

Section 06: Fan Stories - Ultimate Babe Ruth Fans

Not only does the Babe's legacy continue today through the good works of the Babe Ruth League and the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum (see Section 05), it is also exemplified through the passion of Babe's fans. In Section 06, we bring you the stories of two of today's most passionate Babe fans. As you'll see by reading their stories and seeing some of the photos, these guys really are the ultimate Babe Ruth fans.

In this section, we present a selection of articles from yesterday and today for your reading pleasure.
