On October 1, 1932, the Yankees were visiting the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field for Game 3 of the World Series. Chicago players and fans were heckling the masterful, but aging, Babe. In the fifth inning on a 2-2 count, Babe hit a home run that no spectator would ever forget. No one would forget it because immediately prior to his mighty swing, the Sultan of Swat had the bravado and showmanship to predict that he would hit a home run by motioning toward the outfield wall and flagpole. Literally since that moment eighty years ago today, reporters and fans have debated whether Ruth truly ‘called’ his home run and the event has become a part of baseball legend.
