Sadly, Baseball has lost one of its best today. Hall of Famer and long-time San Diego Padre, Tony Gwynn, has passed away from salivary gland cancer. In his 20-year career – all with the Padres – Gwynn had 3,141 hits and a .338 career batting average, as well as 15 All-Star game appearances. More importantly than his Hall of Fame statistics, Gwynn was one of the best representatives of the game in recent times. He was an example of hard work and clean play in an era that was tainted by steroids. Commissioner Bud Selig said today, “Major League Baseball today mourns the tragic loss of Tony Gwynn, the greatest Padre ever and one of the most accomplished hitters that our game has ever known, whose all around excellence on the field was surpassed by his exuberant personality and genial disposition in life.” Rest in peace Tony. Thank you for your contributions to our great national past time.
